Jjimjilbang, noraebang, PC방, hanbok. How they work and what to expect.

In short

Some things you'll mostly only find in Korea: a jjimjilbang (24-hour spa), noraebang (singing room), PC방 (gaming cafe), and hanbok photo rentals are the big ones.
Jjimjilbang (~₩8,000–20,000): two zones: a gender-separated bath (mogyoktang) where nudity is required, and a co-ed sauna floor where you wear the provided uniform. You can skip the bath and just use the sauna floor.
Your wristband key is your locker key and your wallet. Tap it to buy snacks (try sikhye + sauna eggs), scrubs, and services; settle up when you leave.
These are everyday places, cheap and fine for foreigners. Nobody will be watching you.

Besides palaces and food, these are things Koreans do in everyday life. Here's how they work so your first visit isn't awkward. Pair with places to visit and Korean food.

Jjimjilbang (찜질방): Korean spa

It's a bathhouse, sauna and all-night lounge in one. Locals soak, sweat, snack and nap there for hours (some even sleep over). It's an ordinary neighborhood place, and it's cheap. Here's how it goes:

1. Shoes off, pay, get your kit

Store shoes in a small locker at the door. Pay (~₩8,000–20,000; night rates a bit higher) and receive a wristband key, a cotton uniform (shorts + tee), and small towels. Follow 남 (men) / 여 (women) to the changing room.

2. The bath (mogyoktang): nudity required

Gender-separated, everyone the same sex. Shower fully first (bring or buy shampoo), then use the hot/cold pools and steam rooms. Optional: a seshin body scrub by an ajumma/ajeossi (~₩15,000–20,000) leaves your skin very smooth. Tie long hair up. Prefer to skip nudity? Go straight to the sauna floor instead.

3. The sauna floor (co-ed): uniform on

Change into the uniform for the communal floors: themed dry saunas (salt, charcoal, ice rooms), heated ondol floors for napping (wooden-block pillows), snack bar, PC방, and more. Try the snacks: sikhye (sweet rice drink) and maekbanseok baked eggs are the classic combo.

Good to know: tattoos are fine (unlike stricter Japan). If you're anxious about going bare, it's OK to wear underwear under the uniform. Nobody checks. Foreigner-friendly spots include Dragon Hill Spa (Yongsan, 24h, 7 floors) and Spa Land Centum City (Busan). Bring/buy: face wash, hair tie, scrub mitt; everything else is usually provided. Noraebang (노래방): singing rooms

Private karaoke rooms rented by the hour (roughly ₩15,000–25,000/room), with tambourines, a big English/Korean song catalog, and often "service" (free extra) time.
Coin noraebang (코인노래방) let you sing a few songs for ~₩500–1,000 each. Good for going alone or in pairs.
A common way to end a night out (see nightlife). You don't need to sing well.

PC방 (PC bang): gaming cafes

High-spec gaming PCs for ~₩1,000–1,500/hour, open late, with cheap food delivered to your seat (ramyeon, fried snacks).
They're comfortable and social, and you get to see how big gaming is in Korea. Even non-gamers use them for a screen and a fast connection.

Hanbok & other hands-on experiences

Hanbok rental: rent traditional dress (~₩15,000–30,000 for a few hours) near Gyeongbokgung. Wearing hanbok gets you free palace entry, and you get great photos.
One-day classes: kimchi-making, K-pop dance, pottery, calligraphy, tea ceremony. Book via Klook, KKday, or Trazy.

Common questions

Do I really have to be naked at a jjimjilbang?

Only in the gender-separated bath area. You can skip it and enjoy the co-ed sauna floor fully clothed in the uniform.

How do I pay for snacks inside?

Tap your wristband key. It tracks your spending, and you settle the total at the front desk on the way out.

Are tattoos okay?

Yes. Foreigners with tattoos visit jjimjilbangs without issues.

Can I sleep at a jjimjilbang?

Many are 24h and allow overnight stays on the communal floor. It's a cheap, very Korean option.
