Gyeongju

Gyeongju is where you see Korea's distant past. It's a compact city where royal tombs sit between cafes and 8th-century temples stand on the hills. Here's how to visit. It goes well with a Busan trip. See templestay for an overnight temple option.

Getting there & around

• From Busan: KTX ~50 min to Singyeongju (or Mugunghwa/bus). Busan is the easiest base, and many people do Gyeongju as a day trip from there.
• From Seoul: KTX ~2h to Singyeongju Station; book on Korail Talk. Staying one night makes it more relaxed.
• Around town: the historic core is compact. Rent a bike, walk, or use local buses/taxis (Kakao T). Naver/Kakao Map for routes.
• How long: a full day covers the highlights; two days lets you add Bulguksa/Seokguram at a relaxed pace.

Main sights

• Bulguksa Temple (UNESCO): Korea's most famous temple, a fine example of Silla Buddhist architecture with well-known stone pagodas.
• Seokguram Grotto (UNESCO): a calm stone Buddha in a hillside grotto above Bulguksa. It's especially beautiful at sunrise.
• Daereungwon Tomb Complex: grassy royal burial mounds you can walk among; enter Cheonmachong to see inside a tomb and its golden crown.
• Cheomseongdae: a 7th-century stone astronomical observatory, one of the oldest surviving in East Asia.
• Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond: a former royal garden. It's very pretty lit up at night, with reflections on the water.
• Gyeongju National Museum (free) for Silla gold crowns and the Emille Bell; Hwangnidan-gil for hanok cafes and shops.

Tips

• Hanbok rental near the tomb parks gives you great photos and fits the setting.
• Seasons: spring cherry blossoms (around Bomun Lake) and autumn foliage are the best; summer is hot, winter quiet.
• Evening plan: save Donggung & Wolji and Cheomseongdae for after dark when they're lit.
• Signature food: Gyeongju ssambap (wrap-rice feasts) and hwangnam-bbang (red-bean pastry) as a souvenir.
