Jeju Island

Korea's volcanic island. Getting there, getting around (renting a car helps), and what to see.

In short

Jeju is Korea's volcanic island, ~1h10 by plane from Seoul (Gimpo) on one of the world's busiest air routes. It holds three UNESCO titles (Hallasan, lava tubes, Seongsan sunrise peak).
Rent a car. The island is big (~73km across) and buses are slow, so ~70% of visitors drive. Residents need a Korean licence; tourists need a 1949/1968 IDP + home licence (see car rental).
3–4 days is about right; 5+ if you want to hike Hallasan and take it slow. Best in spring (Apr–May) and autumn (Sep–Oct).
Domestic travel needs only your ARC/ID (no passport). Jeju also has its own 30-day visa-free entry rule for some tourists arriving directly.

Getting there & around

Fly: Gimpo–Jeju is ~1h10 and cheap if booked ahead; also from Busan and other cities. Ferries exist but are long.
Car: the best way to see Jeju. Book via Klook/Trip.com, take full CDW insurance, and film a walkaround at pickup/return (Jeju has Korea's most rental disputes). Your T-money works on Jeju buses too.
No car? Buses (incl. the 600 airport limousine to Seogwipo) and Kakao T taxis work but take a lot of time; day tours (~₩40,000–80,000) cover the highlights. Use Naver/Kakao Map for directions. You can paste phone numbers as destinations.
Where to base: Jeju City (north, airport, urban) vs Seogwipo (south, waterfalls, scenery). With a car, location matters less, since anywhere is ~1h away.

Main sights

Hallasan (1,947m): Korea's highest peak. Summit trails (Seongpanak/Gwaneumsa) are 8–10h and need a QR reservation (book on the 1st of the month at visithalla.jeju.go.kr); easier options like Yeongsil (~3h) skip the booking. See hiking.
Seongsan Ilchulbong: a tuff-cone "sunrise peak". It's a short 30-min climb with wide views.
Manjanggul Lava Tube: a huge volcanic cave, cool even in summer.
Beaches: Hyeopjae & Geumneung (clear, shallow), Hamdeok, Woljeongri (cafe strip).
Udo: a small island 15 min by ferry from Seongsan. Rent an e-bike to ride around it.
Osulloc Tea Museum & green-tea fields, waterfalls (Cheonjiyeon, Jeongbang), and the coastal Olle trails.

Eat & experience

Black pork BBQ (흑돼지): the island's best-known food. There's also fresh seafood and haemul ramyeon (seafood ramen) at beach shacks.
Tangerines (감귤) are everywhere, with the peak in winter. There are lots of tangerine cafes and desserts.
Haenyeo culture: watch the free-divers or visit the Haenyeo Museum. It's UNESCO-recognized heritage.

A simple 4-day flow

Day 1: West

Land, pick up the car, Aewol coastal drive, Hyeopjae Beach, Osulloc tea fields, sunset at an oreum.

Day 2: South

Seogwipo waterfalls (Jeongbang/Cheonjiyeon), Camellia Hill, dinner at Seogwipo Olle Market.

Day 3: East

Sunrise at Seongsan, ferry to Udo, Manjanggul cave, Hamdeok/Woljeongri cafes.

Day 4: Hallasan or a slow day

Hike Yeongsil (or summit if booked), or beach-and-cafe day. Return the car 2h before your flight.

Common questions

Do I need a passport to fly to Jeju?

No. Domestic travel needs only your ARC/ID. Bring the physical card.

Can I skip renting a car?

You can, using buses/taxis/tours, but it's slower and you can't see as much. Most visitors (and residents) drive.

How many days?

3–4 for highlights; 5+ to hike Hallasan and relax.

Best time to visit?

Spring (Apr–May) and autumn (Sep–Oct). Summer is hot, wet (monsoon/typhoons) and crowded; winter is quiet with tangerines and possible Hallasan snow.
