Day trips from Seoul
Easy trips out of Seoul you can do in a day. Routes, costs and timing.
In short
- Seoul is an easy base. Most classic day trips are 1–1.5 hours out and cost ₩20,000–40,000 all-in (transport + entry + lunch).
- Easiest by rail: Suwon Hwaseong (30 min), Nami Island/Gapyeong (ITX ~1h), Incheon Chinatown (subway ~1h).
- The DMZ is different. You can't go independently, so book a registered tour and bring your passport. Tours don't run Mondays.
- Start early to avoid crowds and catch the last trains, and use Naver/Kakao Map. Your T-money works on Line 1 trains and buses, but ITX/KTX need separate tickets.
Living here, you can go somewhere quite different in the morning and be home by dinner. These are the usual one-day trips. For overnight destinations see places to visit.
Easiest by train
- Suwon (Hwaseong Fortress): the easiest one. 30 min by KTX (~₩4,800) or 1h on Subway Line 1 (~₩2,100). Walk the 5.7km UNESCO fortress wall (~2.5h), eat Suwon galbi, and see the Starfield Library. You can do it in half a day.
- Nami Island & Gapyeong: take the ITX-Cheongchun from Yongsan/Cheongnyangni to Gapyeong (~1h, ~₩6,900), then shuttle/taxi to the ferry (combo ticket ~₩16,000). You can add Petite France, Garden of Morning Calm, and Gapyeong Rail Park. The Gapyeong City Tour Bus loops all four and saves on taxis. Nami is best known for its metasequoia tree tunnels.
- Chuncheon: continue past Gapyeong on the same ITX line for dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken) and makguksu, plus the lake cable car. Doing Nami in the morning and Chuncheon in the afternoon works best.
- Incheon: Subway to Incheon Station (~1h) for Chinatown, Songwol-dong Fairytale Village, and Jayu Park, then Wolmido waterfront. T-money the whole way.
The DMZ (special rules)
More day trips
- Everland (Yongin): Korea's biggest theme park, ~1h from central Seoul. Lotte World is even closer (subway to Jamsil).
- Paju: Heyri Art Village, Provence Village, premium outlets, and unification observatories, near the western DMZ.
- Ganghwa Island: ancient dolmens, temples, and quiet coastal trails. It's more rural, so bring a translation app.
- Pocheon: Herb Island and Art Valley. Popular with kids (~2h).
- Seoraksan (Sokcho): ~2.5h by express bus. It's a long day but doable for Ulsanbawi Rock or the cable car (see hiking). Overnight is better.
Practical tips
- Leave early: leaving at 7–8 AM gets you ahead of the tour buses (Nami gets busy by 11 AM) and leaves plenty of time for the last train back. Most sights wind down by 5–6 PM.
- Book ITX/KTX ahead on weekends/holidays via Korail Talk or letskorail.com. T-money doesn't cover these.
- Weekdays are calmer. Bukhansan and Nami get packed on weekends, especially in blossom/foliage season.
- Check Monday closures (many palaces/museums close; no DMZ tours).
- Use Naver Map or Kakao Map, not Google Maps. Pack snacks/water and a battery for rural spots.
- Consider a group tour for the DMZ or multi-stop Gapyeong days. It's often cheaper and easier than going on your own, and English-guided.

What's the easiest day trip?
Suwon Hwaseong. It's 30 min by KTX or an hour on Line 1, walkable in half a day.
Can I do the DMZ on my own?
No. You must book a registered tour and bring your passport. No tours on Mondays.
Does my T-money cover the trains?
It works on Subway Line 1 (Suwon/Incheon) and buses, but ITX/KTX (Gapyeong, Suwon-by-KTX) need separate tickets.
Best day trip in autumn?
Nami Island for the leaf tunnels, or Seoraksan for mountain foliage.
